Description
Motion Pictures employs barrier-grid animation to generate interactive animated art. It embraces both the past and the present, combining an archaic animation technique with controls and modern techniques to create generative art that is animated both on your computer and when you print it. Barrier-grid animations work by creating short looping animations that are 5-10 frames long. Slices of these frames are then interlaced onto a single page. The user then slides a film over the page that is designed to expose slices from only a single frame at a time. As the film slides from left to right, the user sees the animation loop. Moving the film backwards and tilting the film also impact how the animation is perceived. Motion Pictures takes this concept and executes it in with some modern twists. Glyphs are randomly generated and converted into distance fields. These distance fields are used to create looping animations in both 2D and 3D. The film can be controlled using your mouse or a touch screen device, and a keyboard or midi controller can be used to modify the parameters of the shape or animation. The work was inspired by the Poemotion series by Takahiro Kurashima, though I've avoided looking at the books for the past year or so while I worked on this. Motion pictures can be run on your phone so that you can manually move the film, but it may not run on some older mobile phones. 3D mode can be demanding for some computers. Here's how you can toggle the different modes of the art with your keyboard - Press 1 to toggle between barrier-grid mode, where you slide a film to animate, and live animation mode. - Press 2 to toggle between 2D and 3D rendering. 3D can be computationally expensive. - Press 3 once to get a version of the film designed to be printed on 9"x6" transparency. Press 3 again to get a 9"x6" version of the art. Any changes you've made to the art parameters will be reflected in your print. Here's how you can control the parameters of the art. Pressing these keys increases the value, and holding shift while pressing them decreases the value. - Keys Q, W, and E let you control the width, height, and rotation of the barrier-grid film - A lets you control the speed of the live animation mode - S, D, F, G, and H control parameters that will affect 2D and 3D modes - Z, X, C, V, and B control parameters that will only affect the 3D mode Midi Controls - The parameters that are not related to the film size/rotation can be controlled by MIDI CC numbers 32-34 - Midi notes 32 and 33 toggle the Barrier-grid/live modes and 2D/3D
