This 29mm bronze denarius from Tyre in Phoenicia, issued during the reign of Emperor Elagabalus, showcases Astarte being crowned by Nike while Marsyas and a murex shell adorn the design. Elagabalus had a reputation for eccentricity and excess, which challenged the tradition during this rule. The denarius, equivalent to a day’s pay for a skilled laborer, symbolized Roman influence and prosperity between the Phoenicians.
