Enter a space where coffee is more than a beverage; it is a profound ritual that weaves together community, reflection, and art. Yatreda’s Coffee Ceremony invites you to experience the depth and beauty of the traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony. This installation contrasts the fast-paced modern coffee culture with the contemplative Ethiopian tradition, offering a unique blend of performance, community engagement, and digital art.\n
Guests participating in in the ceremony are served coffee in hand-made glass cups, crafted to embody the essence of traditional Ethiopian ceramic cups. Each guest becomes part of the ritual, sharing stories, reflections, and moments of connection, guided by the storyteller, and bathed with traditional Ethiopian music.\n
At the end of the ceremony, an NFC chip in the coffee cup reveals a unique digital artwork. Each participant receives one of 180 unique NFT artworks featuring text-based proverbs in Amharic and English. These proverbs, gathered from the community of Toledo during Yatreda’s digital art residency, offer wisdom and insights, projecting onto ceremonial objects through beautiful patterns of light and smoke.\n
Coffee Ceremony by Yatreda: Toledo Museum of Art is an immersive cultural journey that bridges continents, celebrating the communal and reflective nature of the Ethiopian coffee ceremony and its relevance in today's fast-paced world. It was created by Yatreda ያጥሬዳ for the House of Yatreda exhibition held in concert with Ethiopia at the Crossroads exhibition as a part of the 2024 Digital Artist in Residency at the Toledo Museum of Art.\n
